about

Your Friends
by Ken Baake, 1970s/2012

I wrote this song originally sometime in the 1970s about one or probably several girls I both cared for and lamented—relationships that had changed or had never come to be. I revisited the song and revised it in 2012, a little wiser, but still recognizing that love and friendship is a big lake you never tire of swimming in.

lyrics

Your Friends
Late 1970s/revised 2012

I wish I had you here
to watch when you’re not looking.
I wish you were singing songs.
to hear when I’m not listening.
I wish that you could hear me, too.

Music, brown eyes, your style.
Song is laughter, cotton dress and your smile is full
Your smile is full.

I’ve thought about your letters.
Made impressions with the ink.
Your words become my shelter, my home.
I hide in the parlor.
I know that you are building still.
I hope that you can build for me, too.

Gentle care, auburn hair.
In a tree, can’t you see
That your friends love you
Your friends love you.
Your friend loves you.
